TEMPLE OF EPIKOURIOS APOLLON
In the heart of the Peloponnese, in the relief landscape of Vases, dominates the temple of Epicurius Apollo, a temple perfectly harmonized with its natural space. It is one of the best preserved temples of classical antiquity, at an altitude of 1.130 meters. It was dedicated by the inhabitants to the Epicurus Apollo (a supporter in war or illness). Inspiration and builder of the temple, Iktinos, a great architect of antiquity, who together with Kallikrates designed the Parthenon. Iktinos thoroughly studied the surrounding area when he took over the building of the temple. For its construction he preferred to use limestone ash, which is material of the place. This choice resulted in the temple being a natural element of space, self-sufficient and eternal. Its architecture combines elements of different rhythms. The exterior is characterized by the strict lines of the Doric style, while the decoration, the sculpture and the central pillar in the interior belong to the Corinthian rhythm.
